Former mayor comments on Talifarro-Schor dispute

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Former Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero is weighing in on the dispute between former Fire Chief Randy Talifarro and Mayor Andy Schor.

It began when Mayor Schor put out a statement about hiring more diverse fire and police departments.

In response, Talifarro made several claims suggesting Schor did not seriously consider his ideas while he was chief.

The mayor put out a response detailing his side of the story.

Now, Bernero is giving his thoughts.

You can read his statement in its entirety here:

Chief Talifaro is a consummate professional who has earned the respect of Lansing area citizens in and out of the fire service. The Lansing Fire Department and indeed the City of Lansing are better off thanks to Randy’s bold and intelligent leadership.

City leaders should pause to carefully consider what he has to say. Reaction is not the same as thoughtful reflection and response. Racial reconciliation and healing is possible only when all sides are at the table with a listening ear and an open mind. That is the kind of dialogue Lansing must strive for, now more than ever.
