UPDATE: MDOT inspects bridge after falling concrete hits driver

A piece of concrete fell from a bridge off US-127 on Wednesday.

It happened around 8 a.m. near the Barnes Road overpass in Vevay Township and hit one car.

A woman, 38 from Jackson, was driving northbound on US-127 when if fell from the Barnes overpass.

The concrete went through her windshield and hit her in the head.

She was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injures.

MDOT inspected the affected area of the bridge after the accident happened.

According to MDOT crews chipped away more loose concrete from the bridge when they arrived.

MDOT said they will be installing fault decking next week on the bridge.

Its going to be plywood installed underneath the bridge to catch anything else that may fall in the future.

Greg Lush from MDOT said, "Its a wood forming that goes along the bottom of the bridge that would catch anything else that would fall off in the future if something else does come loose."

Back in 2018 the bridge was inspected.

Another routine inspection was scheduled for this coming June.

MDOT crews will continue with that scheduled inspection.

When they were on scene Wednesday they did not inspect the whole bridge.

They only inspected part of it to deal with the accident.

MDOT has plans to reconstruct the bridge in 2023 but that date could be pushed up due to the condition of the bridge.

However, right now the bridge is considered to be in fair condition.

That classification could change pending on the June inspection.

News 10 was told other bridges in the same corridor were inspected also Wednesday.
