KENT COUNTY, Mich. (WILX) -- Two missing kids have been found safe on Mackinac Island.

The Michigan State Police sent out a missing advisory for 12-year-old Alexis Ypma and 9-year-old Jenna Ypma of Byron Center, Michigan on Feb. 11 just before 11 PM.

The police said that the girls were believed to be with their father, Joel Ypma. They also said he was showing signs of a mental episode.

When the kids didn't show up at school on Monday morning, the family became concerned and reached out to Joel with no luck.

That's when the police got involved and issued the alert.

Just after midnight on Feb. 12, the Mackinac Island Police Department reported to the Kent County Sheriff's department that an innkeeper saw the family at a hotel on the island. Police were able to confirm that and found the girls and Joel Ypma.

The only access to and from the island this time of year is via airplane.

It was confirmed that they had flown in earlier that day.
