UPDATE: Car accident on eastbound 96 claimed two lives

The Livingston County Sheriff has confirmed an accident that closed down a portion of I-96 for hours on Tuesday morning was fatal.

Sheriff Michael J. Murphy reports that a vehicle ran off the road on eastbound I-96 around 7 a.m.

The vehicle, a Subaru Ascent, then struck a tree and caught on fire, according to the Sheriff.

At this time, it is unknown why it left the highway.

Once first responders put out the fire, it was determined that the driver and a front seat passenger were dead.

Their identity will not be released at this time.

No one else was in the vehicle.

The car was registered to a 72-year-old woman from East Lansing.

Livingston County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Michigan State Police, Fowlerville Police, Livingston County Ambulance and Fowlerville Area Fire Department.

The crash remains under investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff's Office Traffic Bureau.
