EAST JACKSON, Mich. (WILX)-- Students and teachers at East Jackson Elementary School are ringing in the new school year with a new team member and new programs. News 10 anchor Lora Painter talks with students and school leaders to find out what makes this year extra special.
Heather Jacobs, principal of EJES said, "I think the start of the year is the most difficult and it’s very important for the students to get into the routines."
To help with that transition is the school's new assistant principal Becky Hager. She has more than 20 years of teaching elementary students in Lansing. Very was working in the classroom daily and is now taking her career to the next level by becoming a part of administration. This new chapter in Hager's life was years in the making; requiring a sacrifice many working moms may relate to.
Becky Hager, assistant principal at EJES said, "I have my three sons and I wanted to wait until they were older before I moved into this journey. I just wanted to spend time with my boys and not miss out on opportunities with my boys. So now that all three of them are off to college and on their own, it’s time for me to do the things that I want to do this next part of my journey and the boys are super excited for me to be in this position."
The school is adding more free meals, a new Lego robotics team, and is implementing a program Hager is bringing with her from her previous teaching experience called CHAMPS.
