Columbia Township Department investigating reported "food tampering"
The Columbia Township Police Department is currently investigating a "food tampering" that was first reported on Monday, Sept. 16.
At around 6:15 p.m., an area resident came to the Columbia Township Police Department office to report the possible food tampering, according to the Columbia Township Police Department.
The resident reported purchasing a jar of Miracle Whip mayonnaise at the Dollar General in Brooklyn the same day, according to the police department.
Police said a short time after arriving home, she removed the protective seal and placed it in the refrigerator. They said her husband took the jar out of the refrigerator to use it and when using a butter knife to remove the product, he felt the knife hit something hard.
Police said closer inspection showed a syringe pushed down into the middle of the jar of mayonnaise.
Police said contact was made at Dollar General where management immediately removed the remaining exact product from the shelf.
Police said the remaining jars are being retained by Columbia Township Police.
The FBI was contacted Monday night along with the Food and Drug Administration, according to police.
Police said the cooperative effort between the agencies is continuing with further investigation and discussions to occur on Wednesday.
