OKEMOS, MI. (WILX) - In this edition of Schools Rule, WILX News 10 is talking summer camp-the Okemos Special Needs Day Camp, to be exact.
Campers enjoy class time during the Okemos Special Needs Day Camp.
Campers make the most out of summer and learn some pretty invaluable lessons along the way.
2019 is the 42nd year of the Okemos Special Needs Day Camp. Camp runs all summer long and camp staff says it's about more than enjoying time off.
"It's really just a great chance to go out and have fun and try new things and meet new campers," said Jamie DeLong, Camp Director.
Campers get to go on field trips, like the Air Zoo and the Planetarium.
"It gives campers an opportunity to build friendships, meet new people, try new things in the community," said DeLong. "It really, it keeps kids from sitting at home."
Jamie and Camp Staff say one of the big goals is to keep campers from sitting at home when they should be making the most of their summer.
"This camp is all just about growth, getting out there, experiencing new things, living life to the fullest, experiencing summer," said Kaelan Camp, a teacher with the Okemos Special Needs Day Camp.
Campers have classes everyday and they include cooking, music, dance and art.
"The best way for them to grow is get out of their comfort zone and to come to social things like these and have these experiences and these interactions out in the community," said Camp.
Camp staff says not only is camp fun and exciting, it's fulfilling for both campers and staff in a way that extends beyond the classroom.
"It's great to see everybody get out of their comfort zone and then they find comfort and they build these friendships," said Camp. "It's so awesome for me to see personally because it's something that a lot of our campers struggle with. This camp helps them learn how to build friendships and then they take that with them into the school year or into their lives."
Campers range in age from first grade to adults and there's still time to enroll in this summer's camp session.
