UPDATE: Commission glad Sheriff's office is investigating assault that canceled boxing event
A statement was released on Tuesday, Oct. 8, from the Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission (MUCC) about the incident that took place before the Claressa Shields boxing match that would have been on Saturday.
They said they were pleased that the Flint Police Department was looking into the incident where a trainer was assaulted.
The highly anticipated boxing match was canceled between Claressa Shields and Ivana Habazin, which was to be televised on Showtime, due to the severe injury that Habazin’s trainer, Ali Bashir, sustained during the incident.
“It is unfortunate that an incident such as this took place at the weigh-in of a championship fight. There is no room in our sport for acts such as this” said MUCC Chairman, Jeff Styers. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Bashir for a quick and full recovery which is our chief concern right now.”
It happened at the Dort Federal Event Center in Flint, where witnesses say a person involved with the fight punched Bashir.
He was knocked unconscious and suffered multiple facial fractures.
Police say the suspect has been arrested and is believed to be a member of Sheilds' team.
Our sister station WJRT reported that Bashir was expected to undergo facial surgery.
A press release from SHOWTIME said the two other fights scheduled for Saturday night went on as scheduled.
