UPDATE - Crews are working to get the westbound lanes of I-94 near the Dearing Road exit reopened after a fatal car crash.

Part of the highway was damaged in a fire caused by that crash. M-DOT crews are on the scene trying to get at least one lane opened.

Police are asking drivers to avoid the area. Traffic is being diverted off the highway at the Dearing Road exit.

Around 11 a.m. Tuesday, a semi-truck crashed into a Jeep near the Parma Road exit. An 18-year-old from Albion was driving the Jeep and was pushed into another semi truck in the impact of the crash. She was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office says the semi that caused the crash then hit two other trucks. Deputies say the crash happened where the road is down to one lane for a construction project.

State Police say the backup from that accident then caused a second crash, also involving five vehicles. Troopers say two people were killed when a semi truck hit their car causing it to burst into flames. That caused a chain reaction crash involving three other cars. Two people in those vehicles were treated for minor injuries. Police say the truck driver in the second crash is in critical condition.

Firefighters had to spray a lot of foam to put out the fire. They say that and the flames damaged the road.

All lanes of Eastbound I-94 at Parma Road are now open after two earlier accidents on the highway.

Michigan State Police say while traffic was backed up from a prior accident on Westbound I-94 near Parma Road, a semi truck rear-ended a passenger vehicle, causing a chain reaction crash that involved five vehicles.

Police have confirmed to News 10 that two people in the vehicle that was rear-ended by the semi have died after their vehicle caught fire. The driver of the semi was taken to U of M hospital in critical condition. Two other people with minor injuries were transported to Allegiance Hospital in Jackson.

Westbound I-94 remains closed as cleanup and accident investigation continues.

News 10 remains at the scene and will have updates as more details become available. Stay with us for full coverage tonight on News 10 at 4, 5, and 6 PM.

Two accidents involving multiple vehicles have shutdown westbound I-94 at Exit 133 and blocked the left lane of eastbound I-94 at Exit 130 west of Jackson between Parma and Dearing Road.

The first accident was called in at 10:51 AM as a crash involving a semi and a vehicle that caused minor injuries. An SUV rear-ended a semi truck on westbound I-94 at mile marker 130.

A second accident was called in around 11:12 AM, while emergency crews were still working at the scene of the first accident. Police think that the backup from the first crash may have led to the second crash.

First responders from multiple departments have been called to the scene.

The Jackson Fire Department tells News 10 that several vehicles caught on fire in the second accident and that there are possible fatalities involved.

News 10 is headed to the scene and will have updates as more information becomes available.
