LANSING, MI (WILX) -- On Saturday, women got a chance to learn and try out exciting career opportunities in the construction of skilled trades.

Capital Area Housing Partnership partnered with the Women In Skilled Trades of the city of Lansing, to showcase how needed women are in the trades industry.

WIST works to help educate and inform women about the exciting and fulfilling career opportunities in the construction skilled trades.

"I still have the support of the women who helped me through WIST," said Raquell Rivera. "Now I am working a full-time job with full benefits and get the paid the same amount as a man would."

"It is so important for us in Michigan to have quality people working in all facets of our economy including in the skilled trades," added State Representative for the 69th District, Julie Brixie.

Women make up 40% of the world's workforce but are only 5% of the construction workforce.

By exposing more women to skilled trades, wist hopes to help fill that labor gap and promote the lives of women in the community.
