LANSING, MI (WILX) - Lansing's "It's a Cool Thing to Do" program will go into effect on Thursday, July 18.

That means cooling centers will be open to the public Thursday through Saturday due to higher than normal temperatures.

The program kicks into gear when heat index temperatures from 93 to 102ºF call for the declaration of a Condition Orange: Heat Alert (while heat index temperatures of 103ºF would call for a Condition Red: Heat Emergency declaration), according to a press release from the Mayor's office.

Cooling centers are a good idea for seniors or people with chronic health conditions, or anyone that needs a few hours out of the heat.

Free rides to cooling centers will also be available to those with a physical and financial need through CATA, EATRAN, and the Clinton Area Transit.

If you don't need a cooling center, remember to take care of yourself by avoiding time spent outside in the sun, avoid any strenuous activity, and keep yourself hydrated.

They are also asking residents to check on elderly neighbors or family members without air conditioning.

And, keep pets out of the heat, make sure they have plenty of water and a cool place to rest.
