Family asks for birthday cards for 92-year-old WWII vet

MARLOW, Okla. (WILX) -- The family of a World War II veteran is asking people across the country to send him cards for his 92nd birthday.

Recil Troxil lives in Lawton, Oklahoma. His 93rd birthday is in April, but his family decided they’d try to start his birthday celebration early so he can get enjoyment from one of his favorite things.

An elementary teacher said she found out about the unique request and decided to have her students participate.

"I thought that it would be an excellent opportunity to teach my students two important things," said Joslyn Wood. "One: always be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. And two: kindness is doing something for someone and expecting nothing in return."

Liz Anderson, Troxel’s daughter, told NBC affiliate KSWO, that she thinks her father would really enjoy the cards.

“It makes me happy that he has something because anything that’s an enjoyment to him, is an enjoyment to me,” she said.

The cards will be sent beginning Friday.
