GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WILX) - The funeral for Patrick Lyoya was Friday morning at the Renaissance Church of God in Christ in Grand Rapids.

The service started at 11 a.m.

Lyoya was a Grand Rapids man whose death at the hands of police earlier this month sparked protests and national attention. Thursday, more than 100 protesters joined his family for a march to the state capitol demanding justice for Lyoya.

Where the case heads next

Many protesters are calling for Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel to take over the Patrick Lyoya case. Nessel says if it’s referred to her, she will take on the investigation.

If Michigan State Police ask for charges against the Grand Rapids police officer it would likely end up with the Kent County Prosecutor.

But AG Nessel says her office is best suited to handle the case because it can remain impartial.

“It’s not a matter of not trusting them to do the right thing, it’s the fact that I think it creates friction in those relationships that they need to have, and the optics are not good oftentimes.”
