HASLETT, Mich. (WILX) - If you walk through the halls of Haslett’s Ralya Elementary School right now, you’ll see sunflowers lining the walls.

It’s all to support Ukraine. With all of the images coming out of the war, art teacher Elizabeth Napolitano says it’s hard for even children not to notice.

Napolitano said, “I was also wondering how the students were feeling about what’s going on. So I thought. ‘We’re going to make sunflowers.’”

Sunflowers are the national flower of Ukraine. Students made each sunflower to show their support for Ukraine. At first, she says the students didn’t understand everything, but soon they started talking to each other about their feelings.

One student said, “I think it’s nice that we’re like making sunflowers to show that we’re supporting.”

Napolitano said, “One little girl wrote on each petal things like ‘Ukraine stay strong’ and she also wrote ‘be thankful for what we have here.’ That really touched my heart and a lot of people in the building.”
