MSU: Yakeley Hall camera had banned chip the night Santo went missing

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - News 10 has learned more about why a security camera at Yakeley Hall on Michigan State University’s campus was not working when Brendan Santo supposedly walked by it the night he disappeared.

An MSU spokesperson tells News 10 the camera had been taken offline “weeks” before Santo left the building because it used a Chinese computer chip that was banned by a 2020 federal law.

That law does not allow federal money to be used for equipment that poses quote “national security risks” which includes the chip in that camera.

MSU says as of now there are working cameras in every residence hall on campus.

Santo went missing on the night of Oct. 30, 2021. His body was found in the Red Cedar River on Jan. 21, 2022, a mile and a half west of Yakeley Hall.
