JACKSON, Mich. (WILX) - Residents in Jackson are reportedly smelling a gas leak in the area, causing worry in the community.

American 1 Credit Union had to evacuate their home office due to the smell, as was instructed by Consumers Energy.

However, Consumers Energy says there’s no need to worry, there is no leak.

Instead, the energy company says the humidity is to blame. Natural gas is odorless, so the “rotten egg” smell is added to help identify possible leaks.

They say today, they de-commissioned some of their odorizing equipment, and in the process, some of the odor escaped and the high humidity is causing the smell to linger in the Jackson area.

The smell will continue to stick around however, as Consumers says the have stopped the work today. The company says they will finish the work when weather conditions are “more favorable.”
