MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WILX) - There are going to be fewer fireworks shows in Mid-Michigan this Fourth of July.

Organizers of Meridian Township’s Independence Day fireworks show said it was a tough decision, but pandemic restrictions only being loosened in the last couple of weeks meant that the show has to be canceled for 2021 since permits and contracts needed to be signed earlier on.

“Our township board took that under consideration in April and still with so much uncertainty at that point with COVID, and out of an abundance of caution, they chose to say we’re not hosting fireworks,” said LuAnn Maisner, Meridian Township Parks and Recreation Director.

Meridian Township has had an Independence Day fireworks show for more than 30 years, drawing more than 25,000 people annually.

“It’s kind of rough because it’s something I look forward to every year,” said Ben Guenther, a Lansing resident disappointed about the fireworks cancellation. “I love fireworks, it’s one of my favorite holidays just because of fireworks.”

Delta Township also canceled their show because of the uncertainty and timing. The City of Mason tells News 10 several factors went into its decision to cancel but declined to comment on the specifics.

“That was frustrating,” said Sara Saettler, a Mason resident who attends the fireworks show every year. “I believe a lot of people are looking for normalcy, to get back to normalcy, and while the world is trying, little things like this are setbacks. You know, people want to go and see things with their family that they’ve always done.”

Meridian Township leaders said they hope to have a different event either later this summer or on New Year’s Eve. The good news is there will be some fireworks shows for Independence Day, including in Lansing and Jackson County.
