LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Mayor Andy Schor today signed an executive directive and an executive order adjusting restrictions put into place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The City of Lansing will once again offer in-person programming at community centers, as well as hire to fill vacant positions to ensure that we can appropriately serve Lansing residents,” said Mayor Schor. “It’s vital that we work together and adjust to all health and safety guidelines that are in place while we work on opening City facilities.”

Executive Directive 2021-01 will rescind Executive Directive 2020-02, lifting the hiring freeze originally put into place in April 2020. This means that the City of Lansing Human Resources Department may immediately resume normal hiring processes to fill vacant positions.

Executive Order 2021-03 will allow Foster Community Center, Gier Community Center and Schmidt Community Center to open.

  • Foster Community Center will reopen on June 14, 2021.
  • Gier Community Center will reopen on June 21, 2021.
  • The Schmidt Community Center will reopen immediately.

CDC and MIOSHA guidelines will continue to be followed. All other City facilities remain closed to the public and are accessible by appointment only until further notice.

Mayor Schor, in agreement with Council President Peter Spadafore, plans to allow Executive Order 2020-02 to Declare a State of Emergency issued in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to expire on July 12, 2021.

“The City of Lansing will continue to adapt and make changes as we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. Mayor Andy Schor and I have worked together to implement necessary safety precautions since he issued an EO to declare a State of Emergency in March of 2020, and now we have agreed to allow that order to expire in July,” said Council President Peter Spadafore.
