JACKSON, Mich. (WILX) - The Jackson Northwest girls’ basketball team had to forfeit Monday’s regional semifinal game against East Lansing.

Eight players opted out of playing since the game conflicted with their spring break this week.

A district representative says the team was fully prepared to play in Monday’s game. The decision to go on spring break was made over the weekend by the families.

“We heard from parents that were upset about trips and things like that, but again, we haven’t told anyone they can’t go on their trip. They just had to decided do you want to play, or do you want to go on spring break?”

Geoff Kimmerly from the Michigan High School Athletic Association says “since sports were shut down and pushed back in the state they had no other options for scheduling.”

“We basically had to squeeze five weeks of championships into three weeks,” said Kimmerly.

Kimmerly says it was not just the game dates they had to worry about. Site availability and playoff broadcasts also factored in. Not to mention competition dates for the other winter sports.

“Any school that thought they would still be playing basketball or wrestling this week, or next week, had to take that into consideration,” said Kimmerly.

Leaving games off the calendar for two weeks could have forced the MHSAA to move things around yet again.

“We can’t keep pushing the winter finals back any further, we have a spring season to play a spring season we didn’t get to at all last year,” said Kimmerly.

According to that district representative the basketball program tried to get help from the junior varsity team, but those players were also planning for spring break.
