Michigan reports 2,291 COVID-19 cases, 189 additional deaths

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Coronavirus continues it’s spread across Michigan.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reports 2,291 new cases of COVID-19 in Michigan as of Tuesday, January 5, with 189 additional deaths.

Michigan daily cases appear to be decreasing, as today’s report is 200 less than the last average daily cases number, which was 2,496 for Sunday and Monday.

Testing has been on a decline recently, with testing averaging below 50,000 per day, and over 24,000 done on Monday, January 4. However, while testing has been on a decline, positivity rates remain high. As of January 4, the percent of tests that come back positive is at 10 percent according to the MDHHS.

117 of the deaths reported Tuesday were identified during a Vital Records review according to the MDHHS.

State totals now climb to 504,410 cases and 12,867 deaths.

Ingham County reports 12,752 cases and 191 deaths.

Jackson County reported 7,805 cases and 164 deaths.

Clinton County reports 3,895 cases and 44 deaths.

Eaton County reported 4,628 cases and 97 deaths.

Shiawassee County reports 2,958 cases and 58 deaths.
