In Okemos, Dr. Dennis Perry at Meridian Primary Care, a partner of Ingham Regional, is treating community acquired pneumonia this week.

It's an infection that's acquired in places like work or school.

Symptoms usually start during or after an upper respiratory infection like the flu, or a cold. If after three to five days, symptoms worsen with a fever of 102 or higher, wheezing, tightness in chest, cough or trouble breathing, you should see a doctor immediately.

Pneumonia is treated with antibiotics. Your doctor will decide if you need to be hospitalized.

Dr. Perry is also treating vertigo this week. That's the feeling of movement where you feel as if you or surrounding objects are moving when they're not.

Vertigo isn't viral or contagious.

The main symptom is a sensation of motion or disorientation. You may also have nausea or vomiting, sweating, abnormal eye movements or a ringing sensation in your ears.

If you have signs or symptoms of vertigo, you should see a doctor right away.

Doctors will often prescribe medicine to help relieve the symptoms.

Symptoms of vertigo can be confused with those of stroke, so it's very important to seek medical attention immediately.
