In Lansing, Dan Moore, certified physician assistant at Ingham Internal Medicine and Pediatric Associates, a partner of Ingham Regional, is treating sinus infections.

Symptoms include: thick, yellow, foul-smelling nasal discharge; pressure or pain around the face and eyes, headache, nasal obstruction and congestion, post-nasal drip and a cold that won't go away.

Another sign of a sinus infection is if there isn't progression of symptoms. A cold often goes from the throat to the head to the chest.

If sinus pain and mucus persist after a week, see a doctor. He or she may prescribe antibiotics.

Decongestants and other drugs may help decrease swelling in your sinuses and nasal passages. Steam and hot showers may help loosen mucus.

In rare instances when sinus infections become chronic or long lasting, long-term antibiotics or surgery may be needed to establish adequate drainage.
