If you're feeling sick this week, pay attention to the symptoms.
Strep throat, the flu and gastroenteritis are going around.
Dan Moore, certified physician assistant at Ingham Internal Medicine and Pediatric Associates in Lansing, is treating all three.
Let's start with strep.
The symptoms are: a sudden, severe sore throat; pain when swallowing; fever over 101 degrees; tender, swollen lymph nodes; fatigue and headache.
Sometimes you'll see white or yellow patches on the tonsils and throat.
Kids are prone to nausea and vomiting and may develop a red rash on the body, which is known as Scarlet Fever.
Anyone with a sore throat and fever should see a doctor. Strep is usually treated with antibiotics. You should take Motrin or Tylenol, gargle with warm salt water, get plenty of rest and drinks lots of fluids.
Moore is also treating the flu this week.
Symptoms include: fever, body aches, headache, chills, sweats, cough, sore throat and runny nose.
The flu can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, but it is rare.
You should rest, drink fluids, and take fever reducers like Motrin, Aleve or Tylenol. Children under age four should not take any kind of cough medicine.
See a doctor if your fever doesn't drop or if you have a chronic health condition.
Finally, Moore is treating gastroenteritis this week. Gastroenteritis is commonly referred to as the stomach flu.
The main symptoms are stomach cramping, bloating, nausea and diarrhea. A low-grade fever may be present.
Most cases of gastroenteritis are not serious and will clear up on their own.
Don't eat or drink until your stomach has settled. Then, drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration (Gatorade for adults, Pedialyte for kids). After 24 hours of a liquid diet, you can introduce bland foods.
See a doctor if you can't keep liquids down for 24 hours, or if you've been vomiting for more than two days.
