In Okemos, Dr. Dennis Perry at Meridian Primary Care says viral bronchitis is going around.

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from the lungs. It often develops from a cold or other respiratory infection.

The main symptoms are wheezing and a persistent cough. Other symptoms include: shortness of breath, fatigue, and chest discomfort.

Bronchitis will usually clear up without specific treatment but you should rest, drink fluids and avoid exposure to irritants like tobacco and wood smoke.

You should use a warm mist humidifier to relieve cough.

Bronchitis usually results from a viral infection so antibiotics aren't effective. Your physician may, however, prescribe medication if he or she suspects a bacterial infection.

See a doctor if fever or cough last longer than three days, if your cough is severe, or if you have a high fever for more than three days.
