Common symptoms include: crusty eyelids that are difficult to open when waking, eye redness and swelling, mucus or watery discharge, or the sensation that there is something in the eye.

You may also have a mild sensitivity to light or an itchy, burning feeling in the eye.

Viral pink eye is common. It will go away in seven to 10 days, even without medical treatment.

Anti-inflammatory medications will help with symptoms and cold compresses can relieve swelling.

Bacterial conjunctivitis requires antibiotics.

To prevent the spread of pink eye, wash hands frequently and don't share towels, makeup or utensils.

The pink eye condition is more serious for those that have impaired immune systems or vision in only one eye.
