We start in Lansing, where Dr. Thomas Stout at Mount Hope Community Medical Center is treating flu-like illnesses and gastroenteritis.

Symptoms include: Stomach cramping or discomfort, bloating, nausea (with or without vomiting), and diarrhea.

You may have a low-grade fever not higher than 101 degrees.

To treat gastroenteritis, drink plenty of fluids: Gatorade for adults, and Pedialyte for kids.

Start a BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) diet after 24 hours of a liquid diet, without vomiting. That's bananas, rice applesauce and toast.

Talk to your doctor about prescription medicines to help with nausea.

Jena King, at Allegiance Family Medicine in Mason ---- is seeing an increase in kids with a similar gastrointestinal bug.

Gastroenteritis usually clears up on its own, but you should watch out for dehydration, especially in young kids and the elderly.

Signs of dehydration in young children include: no tears when they cry, a dry mouth, and decreased urination.
