We start in Okemos, where Dr. Fred Bean from Ingham Primary Care Center says flu-like illnesses are going around.
Dr. Bean says these are most likely swine flu cases, because regular flu doesn't usually appear this early in the year.

Symptoms include: fever, cough, congestion and runny nose, body aches, fatigue, and headache.

If you think you have the flu, it's a good idea to call your doctor.
Drink lots of fluids, get rest, and take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for body aches and fever control.
Do not give your kids aspirin.
If you have flu-like symptoms, stay home until you've been fever-free for 24 hours, before going back to school or work.

Dr. Thomas Stout at Mount Hope Community Medical Center in Lansing is also treating the flu, and he says gastroenteritis is going around too.
People sometimes call it the stomach flu, but it's not caused by an influenza virus.

Stomach cramping or discomfort, bloating, nausea with or without vomiting, and diarrhea are the symptoms.
You may also have a low-grade fever.

To treat gastroenteritis, drink plenty of fluids.
Also, start a BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce and toast) after you've gone 24 hours without vomiting.
Talk to your doctor about prescription medicines that help with nausea.

Gastroenteritis usually clears up on its own, without specific treatment, but it's very important to watch out for dehydration, especially in young kids and the elderly.
Signs of dehydration in young children include: no tears when they cry, dry mouth, and decreased urination.
