We start in Lansing, where Dr. Earl Reisdorff at Ingham Regional Medical Center says flu-like illnesses are going around this week.
Symptoms include a high fever over 101 degrees, intense body aches, cough, sore throat, runny nose and fatigue.
If you have the flu, you should stay home for 24 hours after the fever has subsided, without fever-control medications.
Also, drink lots of fluids, rest and take Tylenol for aches, pains, and fever control.
Dr. James Brouillette at Ingham Primary Care Center in Okemos is treating ear infections, usually following the flu and other viruses.
Symptoms include ear pain and fever. Babies and young children are fussy, have trouble sleeping and pull at their ears and cry.
To treat ear infections, take pain relievers, put a warm washcloth or heating pad on the ear, and rest.
Ear infections generally clear up on their own in a couple of weeks, but you should talk to your doctor about prescribing antibiotics or ear drops to help with the pain.
