IONIA (WILX)-- Some of the worst flooding in mid-Michigan came to a crest Saturday. The crest being the highest level the river will reach during a flood season.

Ionia Emergency Management predicts the Grand River in the area won't hold steady much longer, and homes should see water start to recede within a few days.

For many the water going down is good news.

"The Lyons/ Muir, area appears to be receding, the Grand River in Ionia appears to be at crest," said Ionia Emergency Management Coordinator Doug Devries.

Ionia resident, Penny Beeman's house is still surrounded. She and her two kids decided to stay in the disaster shelter Friday night, and the sooner they can get back home the better.

"If we would have crested where they were predicting it would have been impossible to get to. It's right on the border line. Flood waters came right up to my house," said Beeman.

After the waters recede the emergency management teams will still have a lot to do.

"A lot of clean up. A lot of individuals houses were damaged and businesses. We dont look forward to it, but we look forward to being able to help them as much as possible. We want to get their lives back to the way it was," said Devries.

Many roads in Ionia County are still closed to due damage and water.

In Ionia the water is still above flood level at 24.7 feet, a record level for the area. It will stay at or near the flood stage throughout the weekend. Evacuations were suggested to all homes along the river. Devries doesn't believe emergency management will have to issue any more evacuation suggestions for this flood.

"Anytime the water starts receding its a good thing, a good feeling," said Devries.

Until Beeman and her kids can get back to their home they plan on staying in the shelter and helping out.

"Being able to bring my kids to the shelter and allowing them to stay here has allowed me to have peace of mind," said Beeman.
