Slick driving conditions have caused a few accidents this season and the weather is only going to get worse, meaning it's time for the obligatory safe winter driving tips.

That first day of the first big snow and you know how it goes-- everybody forgets how to drive in it and there are dozens of accidents.

Police want to remind drivers when the weather changes, so do road conditions.

WHAT TO DO

No one wants to give up their car for a few days, or worse, spend some time in the hospital, so take it slow when the snow finally hits.

Remember to increase your stopping and following distances too.

It's mostly common sense, but what a lot of people don't do right now is put a winter survival kit in the car.

"(Put) things in your vehicle in case you do get stuck," says Assistant Commander Chris Kelenske of the Michigan State Police.

Kelenske also says the proper equipment will allow you to stay in your vehicle for long periods of time if you get stranded.
