NBC Nightly News

For nine years, “NBC Nightly News” has been the largest single source of news and information in the country. Each week, “Nightly News” continues to be the most-watched network evening newscast, with millions of Americans tuning in for the latest news and information. And each night, “Nightly News” takes viewers to the heart of a breaking news story, whether it is in depth international reporting, extensive domestic coverage or comprehensive political reporting. Led by anchor and managing editor Brian Williams, no other news program provides viewers a better way to get close to a story and receive the day’s most important national and international news.
“NBC Nightly News” provides reports and analyses of the day’s top news stories, in addition to regular reports including: “In Depth,” a longer form piece which examines and provides context, usually for the top news story of the day; “The Fleecing of America,” re-introduced in June of this year, examines government waste; “Lifeline,” takes a look at current health trends in America; and “In Their Own Words,” a unique segment which allows individuals to speak out on one of the day’s top news stories.
After hearing from viewers about the lack of good news in television news, “Nightly News” inaugurated its newest franchise, “Making a Difference” last November. Broadcast on Fridays, “Making a Difference” is a series of news stories about people who are selflessly helping others and individuals who are changing people’s lives for the better.
On November 7, 2005 – under Williams’ leadership – “Nightly News” became the first and only network evening newscast offered on the Internet – free of charge, in its entirety, and on demand. The “NBC Nightly News Netcast with Brian Williams” (www.nightly.msnbc.com) is available on the web at 10 p.m., ET/7 p.m. PT. In addition, Williams is also the first and only network evening news anchor to write a daily blog. On May 31, 2005, Williams began “The Daily Nightly” (www.dailynightly.msnbc.com) and, as he wrote in his first post, it aims to “create a narrative for the broadcast day and a window into the editorial process” at “NBC Nightly News.”
“Nightly News” inaugurated its current format on August 1, 1970 when the “Huntley-Brinkley Report” was expanded to seven nights a week. Previous anchors of NBC’s evening newscast include: John Cameron Swayze (2/16/49-10/26/56), Chet Huntley and David Brinkley (10/29/56-7/31/70), Huntley, Brinkley and Frank McGee (8/1/70-8/15/71), John Chancellor (8/16/71-6/6/76), Chancellor and Brinkley (7/7/76-10/4/79) Chancellor (10/5/79-4/2/82), Roger Mudd and Tom Brokaw (4/5/82-9/4/83) and Brokaw (9/5/83-12/1/04). Brian Williams became the program’s anchor and managing editor on December 2, 2004.
