John L Smith News Conference 9-25-06 |
The 56-year-old
Smith has compiled a 123-72 record (.631) in 16 years as a college head
coach, including an impressive 80-32 mark (.714) in conference games. He
ranks No. 12 among active NCAA I-A football coaches in career victories
(123) and No. 17 in career winning percentage (.631). Smith has produced
six conference champions (two Conference
USA
, two Big West and two Big Sky). Twelve of his 16 teams have
participated in postseason play, including seven-straight bowl
appearances from 1997-2003. Smith is one of 18 head coaches in college
football history to take three different teams to bowl games, including
one of just four active coaches to accomplish this feat (Mack Brown:
Tulane, North Carolina and Texas; Dennis Franchione: New Mexico, TCU,
Alabama and Texas A&M; and Ken Hatfield: Air Force, Arkansas and
Clemson).

Tenth-year head coach Tom Izzo has
compiled an impressive list of accomplishments, including one NCAA
National Championship, four regular-season Big Ten Championships, two
Big Ten Tournament titles, three Final Four appearances, three National
Coach of the Year awards, and seven straight NCAA Tournament
appearances. With a career record of 207-90, it's easy to see that Izzo
knows how to win, but he also knows how to win the right way. In his
nine full years directing the Spartan program, 78 percent of his players
who completed their eligibility also left with a degree. In the last
four years, 12 Spartans have received their undergraduate degrees,
including five each in 2001 and 2003.

Joanne P. McCallie enters her fifth
season as
Michigan
State
's head coach, and continues to shape Spartan basketball into one of the
nation's elite programs. After guiding MSU to back-to-back NCAA
Tournaments and upper division Big Ten finishes, McCallie has

In his third season behind the
Michigan
State
bench is Rick Comley. Comley, who was named the Spartans' head mentor on
March 25, 2002, became just the fifth head coach in
Michigan
State
hockey history. He
enters the 2004-05 season with a 643-506-75 (.555) career record in 31
seasons and ranks seventh all-time on the NCAA hockey coaches wins list
(643 victories). He is one of just seven coaches to reach the 600-win
plateau, a feat he accomplished on Oct. 24, 2002, when the Spartans beat
Lake Superior
State
, 7-0, at Munn Ice Arena.
