LANSING (WILX)-- A 23-year-old man is dead, and two others injured after a shooting in Lansing early Monday morning .

Police say Marcus E. Basey II of Lansing died shortly after being transported to a local hospital for a single gunshot wound to the chest.

The shooting occurred at 2:51 am, Monday, on the 3200 block of West Holmes Road.

The other two victims, a 42-year old female from Lansing and a 20 year-old male also from Lansing had non-life threatening gunshot wounds.
Witness Ashley Page says Basey was visiting for a family get-together when another group of people came up and started fighting them. Approximately a dozen people were involved in the fight before it escalated to a shooting. Page says she saw Basey trying to defend his cousin when someone pulled out a gun.

"He didn't have any beef with these people. The dude that killed him, they don't even know each other," said Page.

After Basey was shot in the chest Page tried to help him even though she didn't know him. She says she tried putting pressure on the wound until friends took him to a local hospital.

"I just kept talking to him and said keep breathing. I just kept telling him he'll be all right," said Page.

Police do not have a suspect in custody, or murder weapon at this time.

Captain Jim Kraus with the Lansing Police Department says when they arrived on scene Basey had already been taken to the hospital, but the two other victims had been left. The two other victims are not in serious condition, but are still in the hospital at this time. They were family members of Basey according to Page.

"With the neighborhood going down the way it has in the last three years something like this was bound to happen," said neighbor Shaunda Quinney-Embry.

The homicide has left neighbors like Quinney-Embry not feeling safe anymore; worrying it might happen as as the block has become a hot-spot for criminal activity.

"Pray for the families. We just need it to stop, because I have kids out here and I don't want it to happen to them," said Quinney-Embry.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call Detective Sergeant Christopher Baldwin at (517) 483-6846.
