At Trinity Church in Lansing, Robert and Esther Mogis are thankful they each have a cot, and a warm place to stay this Christmas. Esther said, "We're real thankful for these people helping us out. Because I don't know what we would have done. We would have been frozen and starving at home."

The Mogis' are among nearly 200 people calling the Church home for the holidays. It's one of several Red Cross shelters set up for people without power. It's powered by people, willing to give their time. Shelly McGeehan is a Nurse at Sparrow Hospital. She volunteered a few hours on Christmas Eve, to help those who may need medication, or have other medical needs. "I have so much, and I think it's my turn to give back."

At the American Red Cross office in Lansing, staff members and volunteers are working behind the scenes, making sure shelters are fully staffed, with plenty of food, toiletries, and activities. Joan Meinke is in charge of Disaster Services, "It's complicated by the fact that tomorrow is Christmas Day. We have volunteers here on Christmas Eve, working at shelters 24/7 and giving of their time away from their family, to take care of the clients in our community, and that's really what we do, we take of them."

Volunteers are manning the phones, coordinating food donations, and deploying other volunteers, to keep the shelters open for people like the Mogis' until the power comes back on. It's a priceless holiday gift the couple says, they will never forget. Esther says, "There's always people, we help each other and it's just wonderful."

The Red Cross has deployed all of it's local volunteers, and needs more. If you can help call (517) 484-7461, extension 167.
