Preparing Your Home For Flooding

Tips to avoid flooding:

1. Make sure your sump pump is working.

2. Keep gutters clean, so water can run off the roof.

3. Make sure downspouts are attached to the gutters and pointed away from the home. It will keep water from soaking into the ground and through the basement walls.

To say the least...it's been busy at Michigan Plumbing.

"It's probably one of the busiest winters that I can remember," said Dan Boles, Service Manager for Michigan Plumbing.

Up until now, it's been mostly calls about burst pipes, caused by cold temperatures. As the snow melts, this week, Dan Boles says the possibility of flooding will increase.

"[It's] going to bring more water into the ground, which could mean more sump pump, wet basement type of calls," he said.

That's why it's important for homeowners to make sure their sump pumps are working. Boles says they can do that by pouring a five gallon bucket of water inside to see if it turns on and off when it's supposed to.

Homeowners will also want to check on their gutters. They should be clear of ice and snow. Downspouts should also be connected to gutters and pointed away from the house. If not, flooding could cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Lori Conarton, of the Insurance Institute of Michigan, says providers are seeing a dramatic increase in claims, so far, this winter. For some, the news isn't good.

"Flooding is not covered in a general homeowner's policy," she said. "Now's a good time to talk to your insurance agent. Find out what's covered and what's not and talk about what you need for your circumstances."

It could keep losses to a minimum.
