Parents Upset Over Holt Elementary Schools' Redistricting Plan

It was a loud and playful morning at Midway Elementary School in Holt- a school that will be much quieter come fall of 2014. Midway will close as part of Holt Public Schools' redistricting plan, and some parents are not happy with the administration's system for placing kids in different schools, a system the school board calls a tiered priority approach.

"It is trying to create as little disturbance as possible because they don't want to upset a lot of people. So they're saying it's okay the Midway families, but we don't want to upset the other families," Dr. Larry Nassar, Parent of Midway Students

Parents of elementary children have different options depending on where their child currently goes to school. If they go to any school except Midway, parents can request to grandfather their child to keep them at their original school. Those requests will be fulfilled first.

Next, families who send their child to a different in-district school than they are geographically assigned to can request to keep their child at that school. Then, parents of Midway students can apply for the school of their choice. After those requests are met, students who attend holt schools but live out of district can apply to stay.

Superintendent Scott says that he expects all Midway kids to end up at their desired school, and the plan will allow most other students to remain at their original school if they want to.

"Right now the number of requests that we're getting don't warrant us to upset those parents and those students. We think we'd be creating a needless upheaval and anxiety across the district, when we think that we may be able to accomplish what the parents want from Midway." Dr. Johnny Scott, Superintendent Holt Public Schools

But some Midway parents feel that it is unfair that they face uncertainty, while parents of children at the other elementary schools can rest easy.

"You're discriminating against the kids from Midway because they go to Midway, and you don't want to offend everybody else. The numbers don't mean anything. It's the philosophy. It's the principle," said Nassar.
