It was moving day for several students and faculty in Lansing.

Davenport University moved into it's new downtown digs Monday near the corner of Allegan and Grand Ave.

The $12 million, 55-thousand square foot facility boasts some state-of-the-art technology and labs to enhance student's learning experience, according to Dianne Rey, the campus director.

"It's going to open up a lot of opportunities for our students and give them a better educational experience," Rey said.

Kathy Hartson, a student at Davenport said she was excited to get started in the new facility.

"This is awesome, it really is," she said. "You can tell the college is expanding with more room for growth and development."

And Hartson is right, university officials said the new facility can accommodate up to 2,000 additional full and part time students.

The nine floor building has several labs for nursing, technology and science simulation and each of the classrooms features an interactive "writable wall" which utilizes a touch sensitive whiteboard with a projector.

Rey said it allows instructors to approach teaching in different and more unique ways.

"You might be teaching from a book whereas now you're teaching through demonstrations, through better equipment that you can visually see and learn better from," Rey said.

Larry Simpson, a finance and accounting instructor at the university said he's a firm believer incorporating technology into his classroom and is glad to see the upgrades.

"I think the students will appreciate the the surroundings better and I think the students will be a little more excited about learning," he said.

There will be an official dedication ceremony for the new campus on August 22 with Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero and Davenport University's president expected to be in attendance.
