The Affordable Care Act went into effect at midnight last night. People can now sign up for health care coverage using the online health care exchange. The average Michigan resident will have 43 options, but there 140 total plans offered by 13 state insurers. Of the 36 states with health care exchange websites, Michigan has the highest number of participating insurers. People will pay dramatically different premiums depending on their income, family size, age, hometown and tobacco use. But you don't have to sign up today or even any time soon to get coverage. You have until March 31st to sign up on the exchange without penalty. But if you want to get coverage by the first of the year, you have to sign up by December 15th. If you are worried about trying to navigate the exchange and choose a plan, there are plenty of people trained to help. They're, consequently called "navigators." There are more than 300 of them in the state of Michigan. We spoke to one of those experts, Don Hazaert, the Director of Michigan Consumers for Healthcare, and asked him your questions.
