EAST LANSING (WILX)-- It's almost like Christmas for some businesses when the college students move back.

Kids needing things to fill their dorm room, apartment, or home is a welcomed sight; but students might have a hard time getting to the stores this year.

Construction on Grand River between Hagadorn Rd. and Park Lake Rd. is already creating long back ups.

"I'm very worried for the fact that they might not get down here or may go across town the other way," said Steven Ansley, Manager of Sleep Doctor.

Ansley says that if traffic is already backing up he can't imagine how for it will be when thousands of MSU students start moving in at the end of August.

For Ansley, and many other businesses on Grand River, the last week of August is one of the busiest times of the year. Ansley says that one week alone brings in twenty percent of his yearly sales.

"It's the most important week of the month, if not one of the top ones for the year."

But construction is ahead of schedule by almost a month according to MDOT. The hope is that if all goes right, construction maybe finished before students start moving in.

"We have our fingers crossed if everything goes well with the weather." said Kari Arend, spokesperson for MDOT.

Arend says if construction's not finished by August 23rd, they still plan on re-opening all lanes on Grand River for that weekend to reduce congestion.

"We will either be wrapped up with construction, or we will be moving those orange barrels off the road way for those two big weekends coming up. The road will be fully open for move-in weekend and labor day weekend."

Keep checking into for update on the progress of the construction as it gets closer to move-in week.
