Shannon Kantner

As a sixth grader in Saline, Mich., Shannon established the “school announcements,” giving her the opportunity to produce, write, direct, and deliver Heritage School’s “breaking news”: lunch menu changes. That appetite for news never changed.

Graduating with high distinction in Communication Studies at the University of Michigan in 2009, she spent her spare time as an anchor, reporter, and producer at Ann Arbor's only television station, WOLV-TV. She enjoyed internships at WDIV-TV in Detroit, the NPR affiliate Michigan Radio in Ann Arbor, and studied abroad in London through New York University Journalism.

Though a proud Wolverine, Shannon isn't a stranger to the Lansing area. Besides a Spartan sister, Shannon often traveled to Mid-Michigan as a multimedia journalist with the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. She became the time-out coordinator for Comcast Sports and spent many Friday and Saturday nights in the penalty box at Munn Ice Arena, interviewing players and fans.

After hundreds of cups of hot chocolate in those rinks, Shannon went back to WDIV for behind-the-scenes action as a breaking news assignment editor before she was accepted to Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism for her masters. Then, she promptly hit the streets of Chicago and Washington D.C. producing stories as a correspondent for KHON-TV in Honolulu and The Military Times.

Shannon is so happy to be back in the mitten and covering news just an hour away from her hometown and her 2-year-old niece. If you see Shannon out and about, say hi! She can't wait to get involved in the community and is always looking for a story with heart. Feel free to send a tip her way at shannon.kantner@wilx.com, on Twitter at @shannonkantner, or visit her Facebook page.
