Dewitt Shows Support As Wieber Prepares For Trials

Signs of support line the storefronts in Downtown Dewitt saying things like "Go for the Gold" and "Wieber Fever."

And as U.S. Olympic hopeful, Jordyn Wieber, prepares to leave for the Olympic trials on Monday, she is feeling the support all around her.

"I'll be in the grocery store and people will come up to me and wish me good luck," said Wieber, 16. "I can't even explain how unbelievably lucky I feel to live in this community where everyone is so supportive."

That support continued, Saturday, at the Prairie Creek Golf Course in Dewitt where over 100 golfers showed up for the 'Going for the Gold' Golf Scramble. The event, planned since last fall, was held to raise money for Wieber's family to accompany her to London for the Olympics should she make the team.

"People think that our trip is paid for, but that's not the case," said Rita Wieber, Jordyn's mother. "If she makes the team, she'll be paid for, but the cost of staying in London for 12 days, plus transportation and food, for our family costs tens of thousands of dollars."

For Jordyn, it would be important to have her family there to watch her compete.

"Just to look up and see them in the stands it would make it feel more normal, more like home," she said.

But until that time comes, Jordyn will continue her rigorous workout schedule.

"I've been training really strong," said Wieber. "Most of the days, two-a-day practices just trying to get all the routines perfected."

If the amount of support she is already receiving is any indication, her community will be sure to stay behind her as she continues to chase her dream.
