Michigan State senior Lauren Wicinski has been named the Big ten Player of the Week. Wicinski earns the honor for the second time in her career, and earns the first weekly honor for the Spartans this season.
Wicinski was named the Tournament MVP at the Butler Invitational, helping her team to a trio of 3-0 sweeps of IPFW, Illinois State, and the host Bulldogs. She recorded 45 kills on the weekend, leading the team in kills in each set, and had big kills in the late parts of each match to secure wins for the Spartans. She also added three service aces and 11 digs on the weekend.
Wicinski’s 45 kills pushed her career total to 1,990, and moving her closer to the 2,000 kill milestone. She is looking to become just the third athlete at Michigan State and the ninth in the Big Ten to amass 2,000 kills; the Spartan school record is held by recent MSU Hall of Fame inductee Jenna Wrobel, who had 2,292. Veronica Morales totaled 2,006 from 1994-97, and Wicinski sits third on MSU’s all-time list.
