Tigers Sign Five Veterans Avoid Arbitration

The Detroit Tigers avoided salary arbitration with five veteran players Friday and signed all of them to one year contracts. They are pitchers Max Scherzer, Rick Porcello and Al Alburquerque along with outfielders Austin Jackson and Andy Dirks. Scherzer, whom the Tigers still hope to sign to a long term deal, goes from $6.75 million in 2013 to $15.5 million for 2014 on the strength of winning the Cy Young Award. Porcello goes to $8 million as the team's fourth starting pitcher.
