Veteran amateur Tom Werkmeister of Kentwood holds a one shot lead after three rounds of the Michigan Open golf championship being played at the Orchards in Washington Township. Werkmeister is at 13 under par, one shot better than defending champion Barrett Kelpin, a 23 year old from Kalamazoo.
Haslett's Chris Mory followed up his second round 66 with a 68 on Wednesday and he now sits at seven under par, six shots out of the lead. Mory is a former Michigan State player. The final round in the $50,000 tournament begins at 8am Thursday with $8,000 going to the lowest scoring professional. Werkmeister is seeking to become the first amateur to win the Open since Bob Ackerman in 1975.
