EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State will kick off the 2013 football season with a prime-time television appearance against Western Michigan on Friday, Aug. 30 at 8 p.m. EDT in Spartan Stadium. The 2013 season and home opener will be televised nationally by the Big Ten Network.

It marks the third-straight season opener for Michigan State under the lights: 2011 against Youngstown State (Aug. 31), 2012 against Boise State (Aug. 31) and 2013 against WMU (Aug. 30). MSU heads into the 2013 season with an 8-5 record (.615) in its 13 previous prime-time TV appearances in Spartan Stadium.

In its 116-year football history, Michigan State is 77-36-3 (.677) in season openers, including a 12-2 record (.857) in its last 14 games. In addition, the Spartans are 95-21 (.819) in home openers, including a 14-game winning streak that began in 1999.

The Aug. 30 game marks the 13th meeting between Michigan State and Western Michigan, with all games played in East Lansing. MSU leads the all-time series 10-2, including a perfect 7-0 mark in games played in Spartan Stadium. The Spartans have won the last eight meetings, including a 38-14 victory over the Broncos in the 2010 season opener. In addition, Michigan State has won 27 out of the last 30 games against Mid-American Conference opponents.

Michigan State’s seven-game home schedule also includes non-conference match-ups against South Florida (Sept. 7) and Youngstown State (Sept. 14) and Big Ten games against Indiana (Oct. 12/Homecoming), Purdue (Oct. 19), Michigan (Nov. 2) and Minnesota (Nov. 30).

Head coach Mark Dantonio welcomes back 16 starters from last year’s 7-6 team that defeated TCU, 17-16, in the 2012 Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. Under Dantonio, Michigan State has made a school-record six-consecutive postseason bowl appearances, and since 2008, the Spartans have won more Big Ten games (27) than any other conference team.

The Spartans enter the 2013 season with a streak of 129 consecutive live TV appearances (games televised regionally or nationally since November 2002).
