commanding 4-0 victory at Bowling Green on Friday evening in the season opener for both teams. Courtney Clem had her first shutout of the season, forced to make just one save on the evening. Offensively, Megan Marsack and Lisa Vogel combined for three of the four Spartan goals, and Olivia Stander finished with a pair of assists in the contest.
" It was a solid win for our team to open the regular season," said head coach Tom Saxton. "We came out very determined and our early effort was rewarded with three early goals. We kind of batted though an inconsistent stretch in the middle of the match, but we sharpened up and finished well. We'll have a pretty quick turnaround now to prepare for our home opener [against Fordham] on Sunday."
Michigan State was aggressive from the opening kick, with a pair of corner-kick opportunities in the opening four minutes, then scored three goals in a 3:32 span early in the contest to put the game in its control quite early. Marsack had her opening goal off assists from Vogel and Olivia Stander in the 10th minute, and had another one past keeper Becca Ison less than two minutes later (Vogel and Alexandra Heffron with the assists) for a 2-0 lead. After setting up both of Marsack's tallies, Vogel buried one of her own 68 seconds later off a feed from Stander. That would conclude the scoring for the opening half.
In the second stanza, the Spartan bench saw significant action with the game assuredly in hand. In all, 19 field players saw action in tonight's season opener. Freshman Allyson Krause capped the scoring with her first collegiate tally in the 87th minute.
Marsack, who had a goal and an assist in her freshman season, has already surpassed her freshman year total in both goals (2) and points (4). Vogel did not have any points as a freshman, but not only had a goal and two assists tonight, but also scored the lone goal in MSU's exhibition victory last weekend over Milwaukee.
The Spartans return to East Lansing and will celebrate their home opener on Sunday at DeMartin Stadium, welcoming Atlantic 10 entry Fordham to town. Gametime on Sunday is noon.
