Softball Splits Day at No. 25 Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. – Michigan State softball split the day at No. 25 Wisconsin. In game one the Spartans fell, 3-0, before rallying for a win in game two, 11-5. MSU won the series after picking up the win in game one, 9-4. Sophomore Stephanie Sanders tallied four RBIs and senior Jayme O’Bryant recorded five to lead the MSU offense. Michigan State owns a 24-24 record on the season and 9-10 in Big Ten play.

In game one, Wisconsin scored its first run in the bottom of the first. After the third, fourth and fifth innings went scoreless; the Badgers scored two in the bottom of the fifth to finalize the score at 3-0.

Sophomores McKinzie Freimuth and Ellie Stoffer went 2-for-3. Junior Kelly Smith fell to 17-15 on the season after allowing three runs, all earned.

Michigan State began the second game with six runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Alyssa McBride was first to score as senior Jayme O’Bryant reached on a fielder’s choice. Freimuth was sent home off of a single to right field from junior Sarah Bowling. Sanders hit a grand slam to notch four RBIs and give the Spartans a 6-0 lead.

Wisconsin tallied one run in the bottom of first and one in the bottom of the third to narrow the gap in score to 6-2.

The Spartans answered with three runs in the top of the fifth from O’Bryant’s three-run home run to left field.

The Badgers put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth, before Michigan State notched two runs in the top of the seventh. O’Bryant earned a fourth RBI with a double to centerfield to advance senior Kylene Hopkins across the plate. O’Bryant then scored off of freshman Destinee Luna’s sacrifice fly out to centerfield.
In the bottom of the seventh, Wisconsin scored the final run of the game.

Freshman Dani Goranson improved her record to 6-8 on the season after allowing only two runs, both earned, and striking out two batters in two innings pitched. Smith shared time on the mound for five innings, allowing three runs, all earned.

Michigan State will head to Lincoln, Neb., for the Big Ten Tournament May 9-12. The tournament bracket will be released Monday by the conference.
