Max Scherzer has become just the third pitcher in major league history to open a season 19-1.
Scherzer outpitched Mets ace Matt Harvey in leading Detroit to a 3-0 shutout at New York. Scherzer hit an RBI double in the second inning and limited the Mets to three hits while striking out 11 in just six innings.
The other big league pitchers to win 19 of their first 20 decisions in a season are Rube Marquard in 1912 and Roger Clemens 12 years ago.
Andy Dirks went 3-for-3 against Harvey, who allowed a career-high 13 hits but just two runs in 6 2/3 innings.
