Penn State to Pay Ex Assistants $4.4 Million in Severance

Penn State interim athletic director David Joyner said Friday the school will spend $4.4 million in severance pay for six assistant coaches no retained by new head coach Bill O'Brien. Joe Paterno's final pay has not yet been determined. O'Brien retained two former Paterno aides-- Ron VanderLinden and Larry Johnson. In addition, assistant Mike McQueary is still on administrative leave but not expected to return next fall. Joyner says Penn State's budget will end up $5 million in the red for 2011.
