ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 23 Michigan State women’s golf team began play at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic Friday at the University of Georgia Golf Course. The Spartans carded an 8-over 296 in the first round and are tied for eighth in the 17-team field. The 40th annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic features 13 teams ranked in the Golfweek Top 50.
Junior Caroline Powers led MSU with an even par 72 and is tied for 16th. Powers shot a 36 on both the back nine and front nine, with three birdies and three bogeys along the way.
Liz Nagel is right behind Powers with a 1-over 73 to sit in a tie for 25th. The Dewitt, Mich., native was steady throughout the day, carding 14 pars and two birdies against just one bogey and one double-bogey.
Christine Meier (75) and Lindsey Solberg (76) rounded out the team scoring for MSU, while Allyssa Ferrell shot a 78.
